The Lights of Christmas : A Night at St Mary's Cathedral Sydney

Christmas Lights have always fascinated me and it seems that they evoke the same wonder in my own children. How they have evolved since I was a little girl becoming much more than a string of flashing bulbs wrapped around verandas.

Sydney nights have come to life with Christmas cheer this December with a plethora of light displays. After recently climbing the bell tower at St Mary’s Cathedral I was keen to return to view the Christmas Light show at the site which promised to be like no other.

The Lights of Christmas at St Mary’s Cathedral commences each evening at 7.30pm with a choir performance. The lights starting at dusk and continuing until midnight right up until Christmas Day.

St Mary’s Cathedral was a hive of activity with many families out to view the majesty and beauty of the lights reflected on to the building. We found a spot, sat, ate our supper (remember to pack it!) and watched in awe as the cathedral transformed. The Twelve Days of Christmas, the Madonna’s and patterns all appeared. There were times my mouth hung open.

What was exciting was the diversity of the people around us: all races and religions just quietly observing the gorgeous display.

Want to go? The event is free and outdoors. We found parking near the domain (watch the parking metres. They offer 2 hour parking up until 8.00pm and then 6 hour parking) and then walked up to the cathedral.

  1. It is amazing what they can do with lights now! I don’t have anything like that near me, I don’t think so anyway, but or whole neighbourhood lights up which is a little bit of magic in itself. Thanks for joining in my #wednesdaywanderlust link party
