When it comes to travel I can be quite spontaneous and will just head off on a road trip with little planning. We ended up in Cairns for a long weekend once when I spotted a great deal two days before we left. I do know that most people like to do a little planning before they set off on a trip so I thought I would compile some Useful Travel Sites for your reference. These will help you to source great airfares, accommodation offers and information about your destination.

There is no question about it, travel bloggers will provide you with some of the most in-depth, on the ground travel information you need about any destination. They write about places that they visit and will tell you what to look out for and what to avoid. I have a few Australian Travel Bloggers that I keep clicking for solid advice on destinations and how to survive with the kids in tow.

The Wanderlust Team. A little over four months ago I joined the Wanderlust Team-  Boy Eats WorldMr & Mrs RomanceNot A Ballerina and The Climbing Tree. Every month we come together to share our favourite travel stories for the last four weeks. We are each passionate about travel and together, have probably seen most of the world.

Little Grey Box is written by Brisbane local Phoebe. Possibly one of the nicest bloggers on the inter web, Phoebe has embraced her dreams and made both travel and writing her career. Her take on destinations, hotels and the food is refreshing. Although the Little Grey Box doesn’t write about family travel, all of it can easily transfer across to your adventures together.

Y Travel Blog is undoubtably Australia’s largest family travel blog. Caz and Craig Makepeace along with their two daughters are so passionate about travel that they have spent the last year enjoying a great Australian road trip all around our country. With over 4 million followers on Pinterest and an invitation to the White House USA to discuss travel, this family is one to read about for travel inspiration.

Travel with Bender are a family of four exploring the world as nomads really. With no set base, they have worked their way around the globe and can give you all types of advice about where to go and what to see with your family. They even give some great travel hacks and tips to make your adventure run smoothly.

Adventure Baby! never fails to delight me. Christine and I seem  to cross paths a lot yet we have never met. With her gorgeous little girl by her side, Christine explores Sydney regularly and can give you the top places to visit at any given time with the details only a local would know.

Sourcing your accommodation through one of these sites will be a lot cheaper than your local Travel Agency. For peace of mind, check the pricing directly from the hotel before purchasing from any of these sites. Sometimes you will find they’re cheaper.

Expedia. On our recent trip to the United States I booked all of our accommodation through Expedia (often the day before). With a great cancellation policy, I found they provided the best peace of mind when travelling so far from home. The best deal ever – a King suite for the family at the Hollywood Roosevelt for under $300 a night!

Airbnb. If you want space on your holiday, maybe even a pool or an extra room, Airbnb is the place to head for your accommodation needs. From castles to one bedroom apartments above Times Square, glamping to an IKEA stay, there are lots of unique opportunities available with a little searching. With features like Verified ID and public reviews, I’m confident using this platform for my travel bookings.

Of course, Trip Advisor is one place you should head before booking ANY hotel. You’ll be able to check out rankings for the area and read all about what past visitors have thought.

In Australia with have less than a handful of choices when flying around our country. This expands when you want to cross the ocean. The simplest way to find the cheapest fare is to head to Webjet or Expedia who will provide a spreadsheet of all the flights to your preferred destination for a given day. For some reason, I still head to the airlines website and book direct.

Virgin Australia – We have flown across the country and across the Pacific with this airline. We love the inflight entertainment, the food and the staff who always bend over backwards to accommodate our needs.

Qantas – Australia’s favourite airline, we’ve enjoyed flights all around Australia and to the pacific islands with Qantas. The kids always love the activity packs they receive on flights.

Jetstar – Providing some of the cheapest airfares in Australia, Jetstar can be a little temperamental. When booking as a family our seats are generally issued towards the back. Their staff, however, are fantastic and always smiling.

Tiger Airlines – I have never flown Tiger but with Virgin Australia now overseeing the management I anticipate a surge in bookings and reputation.

Before heading overseas to visit the country of your dreams you need to make sure you know the Visa requirements and have been granted one if needed. Don’t have one when you arrive? You’ll be on the next plane home. Smart Traveller is a great resource for the latest travel advice for every country you can travel to.

Do not travel out of Australia without insurance. If you can’t afford it, don’t go. After airfares, insurance is our largest expense but we know that we won’t lose our house and savings if any of us get sick overseas. Repeat: don’t go overseas without insurance!
