The Art of Brick : DC Comics - Exploring the World of Superheroes With Kids

In between our discussions on LEGO, Super Heroes and Super-Villains are regularly the topic of conversation at our place. We’re all a little obsessed. News that an entire exhibition focused on Superheroes made of LEGO was arriving in Sydney made us all a little giddy. It wasn’t long after it officially opened that we found ourselves headed to The Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo to check out The Art of Brick : DC Comics.

Each item in the exhibit has been crafted by the genius artist Nathan Sawaya, who is renowned for creating large-scale sculptures using only LEGO bricks. I have a lot of respect for this guy. He gave up his career as a New York City corporate lawyer to pursue his passion for art and has made it a huge success. The kids grew fond of Nathan (or is it MISTER Sawaya, being so awesome and all?) when they noted that he provides a written commentary behind each of his works and not only includes the number of hours it takes to build each piece but also how many burritos were consumed during the process. Master R was in hysterics each time he noted this reference.

If you are like me and have never ventured off to a LEGO exhibition before be prepared to sweep aside all of your preconceived notions of what you think it will be like. For starters, it is probably going to be bigger than you expect. I thought the whole thing would be in one large room that we would roam around. Nope, the exhibit is actually spread across a series of galleries that capture the feel of that particular room. Think you know all the DC Comics Superheroes and Super-Villians? You are probably going to be surprised. The kids used the exhibit to educate ME about the evolution of some of my favourite superheroes. Who knew Robin (Batman’s sidekick) later became Nightwing! (you didn’t know that, right? Or did you? – leave me a comment).
