Fruit Picking Sydney : Strawberry Picking and More!

If you’ve been reading the Kid Bucket List for a while, you’ll know that fruit picking in Sydney with kids is something we embark on a few times a year. It is actually one of our favourite activities that the whole family loves to do as often as we can. Preferably before the crowds converge. Fruit picking Sydney is a fun day out!

Fruit Picking Sydney with Kids

These days our society seems to be built on convenience and instant fixes. Need a mango out of season? No problem, head to your local supermarket. Fruit today is likely to be on the shelf after being in cold storage since it was picked off the tree. For this reason, many kids today have no idea which fruit grows in which season, or even where fruit has been sourced. I think fruit picking with kids is an incredible teaching moment, and if you’re in Sydney I have the perfect places for you to head!

Chestnuts

We’ve been heading up to Mt Irvine since the kids were toddlers, grabbing a few buckets of Chestnuts every year to take home for baking and boiling. Chestnuts are a glorious food to pick, but they take a little skill to stop your fingers getting prickled.

Kookootonga Nut Farm is our favourite chestnut farm and we head up every year to source a bag of chestnuts for our winter tummies. Fruit Farms in Sydney | Fruit Picking Sydney Map

Important Information Before Setting Off

The fruit farms around Sydney are all privately owned with most farmers making their annual income from the harvest and farm gate produce you are picking. When fruit picking in Sydney with your children please be mindful of this and take your rubbish home with you.

As most locations are working farms they don’t all have toileting facilities. We always stop at a public toilet before arriving at the fruit farms around Sydney so we are prepared.

Due to the unprecedented bushfires and also the drought, many harvests this year are not as abundant as past years. However, fruit is still of a great quality so check the farm social media and/or website to plan your trip.

It is KEY that you check the website or social media of farms you are visiting as some harvests are picked early and you don’t want to drive all the way out only to discover they are closed!

  1. So far we have only tried berry picking at the start of summer near Melbourne. I’d love to try some fruit picking in orchards like this. It’s such a great way to teach kids that fruit comes from trees or vines, and not just the supermarket.

  2. I didn’t realise Chestnuts were big up there too. We have a local ‘Chestnut Festival’ down here in Victoria. Fruit picking is an excellent activity for kids.
