Gardening with kids is incredibly exciting. They find wonder in things that us adults take for granted and are naturally curious about everything. Ten days ago we became the proud owners of a Jamie Oliver Herb Greenhouse kit. Within minutes of bringing it home we had constructed the greenhouse and sowed our seeds.
Jamie has really thought through which seeds to plant in the herb garden. Almost over night our cress was sprouting. As you would know, kids can have short attention spans. I was curious to see whether they would still be interested in the greenhouse after a few days. With the cress ready to harvest after a week (we left it for 10 days) their interest has not waned.
We noticed on harvesting the cress (which you gently remove then wash ready for eating) that our basil was sprouting. We also noted the first appearance of the chives. The coriander is yet to say hello, although on reflection I’m sure that the instructions did say that they take some time.
After watering our garden we brought the cress inside to wash. A thorough wash is required to remove all the dirt that sticks to the roots. We let it dry before buttering some homemade bread rolls. The addition of some feta cheese to the roll topped with our home grown cress resulted in a super yummy lunch. Shhh….we couldn’t stop at one.

Ooh! Home grown. Well done!
She asked for it with her dinner too! It has been a real winner.
