Books have the peculiar ability to take us places. The simple act of opening a book, reading its pages and following a narrative can swirl us down a rabbit hole into a whole new world. Fairies and goblins come to life. Castles swirl up out of the fog, drawing us across their moat into their inner walls to explore. Yes, books are magical things.
Recently I came across illustrator Lucy Letherland’s book “Atlas of Adventures: A Collection of Natural Wonders, Exciting Experiences and Fun Festivities from the Four Corners of the Globe“. Shortlisted for Best Illustrated Book in the 2015 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, this beautifully illustrated book will take your child all around the world to celebrate festivals and experience natural wonders.
I ordered this during the school holidays and was delighted to find it on our doorstep earlier today. The first thing I noticed was its size. This is no ordinary book of maps. Together Master R, Miss N and myself sat on the couch to open it together and the magic began as we turned the first page.
You see, the Atlas of Adventures sweeps you across countries to delight in experiences you may never have considered. We found ourselves walking through a glacier ice cave in Mont Blanc in France; tracking brown bears in the Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria and sleeping under the Northern Lights in Finland. We enjoyed the sights from the London Eye, played the bagpipes at the Highland Games in Scotland and watched the horse parade at Feria Del Caballo in Spain. All of this happened within the first ten pages and we were hooked.
With 85 pages full of adventure, the Atlas of Adventure is a gorgeous addition to your home library. It will take weeks to fully read and explore, offering hours of entertainment for you and your children. We’ve decided to read it together each night this week.
The Atlas of Adventures is available at all good book sellers. I purchased my copy at Book Depository which included free postage for $30.70 (it’s RRP is $38.36).
I had to buy this too. It looks awesome
