My daughter likes to sing. My daughter loves to dance. My daughter can’t keep still and loves to be busy, busy, busy. When her brother isn’t dominating the remote control, I find her turning the station to ABC KIDS and CBeebies so she can tune in to shows that prompt her to move. Imagine her delight when I told her we had tickets to see Lah-Lah live on stage.
Who on earth is Lah-Lah, I hear you say. Well…. Lah-Lah is an Australian band like no other, guaranteed to get the kids and you up and dancing with their delightful songs and awesome actions. The band consists of Buzz the Band Leader, Tom Tom on drums, Mister Saxophone, Squeezy Sneezy the piano accordion, Lola the Dancing Double Bass and, of course, Lah-Lah. They know their instruments and they know how to grab the interest of most kids super quick.
On Friday we headed to the Revesby Workers Club (a first!) for one of Lah-Lah’s school holiday shows. Straight off I was surprised to see such a sea of children (and parents) dressed in black and white striped tees, red and white striped socks and red jackets. They were everywhere! Lah-Lah has her very own Stripy Sock Club! Who would have thought that?
The other thing that surprised me was the line to get in – it was super long. Why were we lining up? I soon realised that some families are so passionate about Lah-Lah that they’ve been to a few shows and know that seating is on a first come, first serve basis. This means, the further you are up the line the better chance of a good seat. Luckily for us EVERY seat had a good view and most kids were up the front dancing from the second song onwards.
The first song started: “Lah-Lah’s big live band…..Lah-Lah’s big live band” a few hand rolls, a bit of hip shaking and we were off. I sat watching. I clapped a few times. Before I knew it, Miss N had left my side and had moved to the front of the stage. She was jumping and singing. She was having the time of her life. Oh my gosh – we were at a rock concert for little kids (no stage diving fortunately!). All of a sudden Mister Saxophone was in the crowd – CONGA LINE!!!! I think every child in the theatre rang to join as they zig-zagged around the dance floor.
Mister Saxophone soon returned to the stage and the concert continued. It wasn’t long after that most of the adults, me included, found themselves up and dancing. I learned a few new moves. The kids were delighted. You know a concert is a success when you can hear the pounding of feet on the dance floor. We were singing our hearts out. “Lah-Lah’s big live band…..Lah-Lah’s big live band”
I don’t know how Lah-Lah did it, but she wasn’t even a little breathless like the rest of us by the end of the concert. We sang Happy Birthday to Mister Saxophone and it was a wrap. But it wasn’t really…. the whole band made their way out into the crowd so each child could have a play of the various instruments. By that point I was a huge fan and had gone a little #fangirl and made sure we went to EVERY instrument for a play.
So what did we think of Lah-Lah Live on Stage? I think the fact that I was up and bopping to their songs fairly quickly says something about how wonderfully addictive each song is, especially coupled with the actions. I still have them playing through my head!
Thank you to Lah-Lah and the band for inviting us along! It was so much fun, we had to write about it!
