Some think us Aussies are born with fins and spend all our spare time at the beach. It’s a common misconception which we haven’t really tried to correct. We like you thinking we spend the year with sand between our toes. Truth be told, my kids don’t spend all year at the beach and when we do go they are within an arms reach of either T or I most of the time. Surfing is something we aspire to do one day…or at least we did.
As the school holidays drew to a close we decided it was time to introduce our two kids to surfing. I know, I know, they aren’t actually strong swimmers so how could I even consider such a thing?
You see we discovered Surf Ryder at the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre, an all-weather, heated surf simulator pool. Seriously, it’s totally cool and, better yet, safe. Sessions last for 30 minutes where you can learn to stand up and ride various waves from small little 2 foot rollers to 2 metre tubes. We love it!
On busy days it’s best to book early. The sessions can take up to 10 people, so if you’re early you may find you have less people in your group which means more opportunities to ride.
With Miss N only 7, I was a little apprehensive about putting her on, but the Surf Ryder is suitable for kids 90cm and over. At a warm 29°C all year round, it’s also comfortable (the team do provide long sleeve rash vests too). What a fun activity!
We booked a 1.00pm slot. We booked early and we were the only people registered at that time. By the time our time came about, the session was full so we shared the simulator. No need to fear, there was an instructor for each group who demonstrated exactly how to use the Surf Ryder, what to do if they fell off the board, and how to move along the wave.
Over the 30 minutes the kids had about 10-12 goes each. They fell off again and again until they were both standing, smiling…..surfing! What an adventure.
You can book your tickets on arrival or call 8878 5111 and choose your session before you arrive. The cost is $18.50 per person for a 30 minute session (includes standard pool entry).
How awesome, and what a decent price, too.
That looks awesome and my kids would love it.
