If you are a fan of Vin Diesel you have no doubt watched Fast and the Furious and know a thing or two about drifting. Drifting is a particular driving technique where the driver is able to keep the car in a state of oversteer while moving through a series of bends. It’s fast. It takes a lot of control the part of the driver.

A few weeks ago I seized the opportunity to head to Drift School Austalia at Eastern Creek with T and the kids to see drifting with our own eyes. Thanks to Adrenaline Australia, T would also have the opportunity to participate in a Drift Battle Hot Laps and practice his doughnuts and handbrake turns.

We arrived at Drift School in the afternoon for our session. Our brief informed us that our session would last from 30 minutes to a couple of hours depending on the number of people. On arrival we realised it was a busy day – there were around 100 participants booked in across the day! We checked it, received our wrist bands and waited for the safety briefing.

The safety briefing was fairly basic. Long sleeve shirts were a must as was the safety helmet. At different times the instructor would provide various instructions which were to be quickly acted on. Other than that, we were encouraged to have fun.

With quite a number of participants on the day, the team broke the crowd into two groups. Our group would participate in the drifting first. Helmet on – check. Long sleeves – check. T was ushered into a car before being whizzed around the course. I was scared to watch.

Yes, I think I squealed a little as I watched T’s car fly around corners at high speed. Wow!

After the adrenaline rush it was over to the handbrake and doughnut tutorial. This wasn’t as fun to watch, but would be quite fun to actually learn. Each tutorial goes for around 10 minutes with the instructor providing 1:1 tuition so you can learn the fundamentals of each movement and then put it into action.

So what did we think? Whilst the day was long when there are many participants, the ride is fun. I think an afternoon (or morning) at Drift School Australia would be a great gift for your favourite daredevil who hasn’t had much experience driving. The cars are fast the tutorials will provide a great foundation for learning to drift. Miss N is keen to try it herself – luckily she can’t reach the pedals yet!
