In between our discussions on LEGO, Super Heroes and Super-Villains are regularly the topic of conversation at our place. We’re all a little obsessed. News that an entire exhibition focused on Superheroes made of LEGO was arriving in Sydney made us all a little giddy. It wasn’t long after it officially opened that we found ourselves headed to The Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo to check out The Art of Brick : DC Comics.
Each item in the exhibit has been crafted by the genius artist Nathan Sawaya, who is renowned for creating large-scale sculptures using only LEGO bricks. I have a lot of respect for this guy. He gave up his career as a New York City corporate lawyer to pursue his passion for art and has made it a huge success. The kids grew fond of Nathan (or is it MISTER Sawaya, being so awesome and all?) when they noted that he provides a written commentary behind each of his works and not only includes the number of hours it takes to build each piece but also how many burritos were consumed during the process. Master R was in hysterics each time he noted this reference.
If you are like me and have never ventured off to a LEGO exhibition before be prepared to sweep aside all of your preconceived notions of what you think it will be like. For starters, it is probably going to be bigger than you expect. I thought the whole thing would be in one large room that we would roam around. Nope, the exhibit is actually spread across a series of galleries that capture the feel of that particular room. Think you know all the DC Comics Superheroes and Super-Villians? You are probably going to be surprised. The kids used the exhibit to educate ME about the evolution of some of my favourite superheroes. Who knew Robin (Batman’s sidekick) later became Nightwing! (you didn’t know that, right? Or did you? – leave me a comment).
The Art of Brick : DC Comics is exclusive to the Powerhouse Museum here in Australia. It won’t be exhibited ANYWHERE else. Fortunately it will be on for a little while longer with the some staying put until 1 May, 2016. You can book your tickets right now with FREE entry for children under 4 years and the addition of 6.00 pm sessions open for Fridays in January. Tickets start at $16.60. A family ticket (2 adults + 2 children) is $64.00.
A special thanks to The Powerhouse Museum for providing us with review tickets.
Super cool!
Great exhibition, I am sure the kids had a blast!
Wow – it does look amazing. I used to take the boys to the Powerhouse all the time when they were young but I don’t think we ever saw anything like this. Who is Nightwing?
Nightwing is Robin from Batman. I never knew he grew out of the role of sidekick
