DirtGirl has been on our radar every since we heard about her big mud pie party at Centennial Park last year. We love her show and find her take on things quite refreshing. When I heard that DirtGirl and her friends were coming to the Sydney Opera House I purchased a bunch of family tickets for friends and family hoping that she would develop their green thumbs.
Booking tickets to attend a show at the Sydney Opera House is always super easy and I especially love that you can choose your own seats. Discovering that front show seats are available is always thrilling and I secured these for this session – yippee!
Now if you don’t already know DirtGirl let me introduce you briefly. DirtGirl is a gumboot wearing green thumb who loves being outside getting grubby it the garden. Joined by her friends Scrapboy, a tinker who loves inventing things with scraps, and, Costa a garden gnome, DirtGirl is on a mission to complete her grubby bucket list of ideas. We love her because she encourages her fans to be themselves, not worry about fashion, and think about the great outdoors and living things.
We headed to the Sydney Opera House by train on this occasion. Traditionally, we drive and book a space in the carpark below the House. A train adventure would be a lovely excursion for the end of the school holidays. Rather than disembarking at Circular Quay, we decided to get off at St James station so we could take a walk through the Botanical Gardens on our way. Perfect!
On entering the Playhouse we immediately oohed and ahhed at the set design. It looked fantastic, a real garden brought to life. We took our seats and prepared ourselves for the show. We soon discovered that DirtGirl’s Get Grubby Musical is quite interactive. The songs are catchy and most have actions which the cast lead the audience through. In no time our kids were out the front clucking around like chickens.
As you would know from my earlier posts, I’m not keen on providing a full synopsis of the shows that we see. Why would you want to see them if we provide an in-depth description of the entire narrative? What I do love to do is provide and overview. DirtGirl’s Get Grubby Musical follows the DirtGirl characters adventures as they prepare and enter their produce at the local show. Littered throughout the show are lessons about agriculture and the impact us humans are having on nature, in particular – bees. It’s not in your face lecturing, but embedded in such away that the kids will pick up on these ideas in a real way.
The highlight of the day was meeting Costa after the show. He invited Miss N and her cousin to join the “A Club” as their names all end in A. He was incredible leading to all the kids thinking they were his number one fan. They’re keen for us to buy his single too!
On this occasion, we had attended with the kids cousins too. We did find that the show was a little young for the older kids, but perfect for the 7 and 8 year old. From the reaction of the other kids in the audience, the DirtGirl’s Get Grubby Musical is suitable for 2-8 year olds. Tickets are available via the Sydney Opera House with the show running daily until January 24, 2016.
