“You have your secret dreams. Follow them. Make them come true.”
A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of being in the audience at an education conference where Li Cunxin was the keynote speaker. Having read Mao’s Last Dancer, when it was first released, I already knew much about his life. Listening to him speak about his childhood and beyond was mesmerising, and had me revisiting the stories within the book. I was transfixed throughout his presentation and extremely impressed when he lifted his right leg upwards, almost vertically, and placed it on the lectern. Amazing!
This year, the Monkey Baa Theatre Company have brought the Li Cunxin’s story to life on stage for children through The Peasant Prince production. I was super keen to go and headed off to the LendLease Darling Quarter Theatre last Saturday to see the debut performance and we were blown away.
The Peasant Prince is a modern day fairy tale threaded with wonder and a strong message that you can reach great heights with determination, practice and a willingness to learn. Li Cunxin’s childhood transformation from an impoverished peasant to the world’s best ballet dancer is reenacted on stage in a manner which is accessible to children. The importance of a strong work ethic is central to the story, along with respect and dignity. The audience will also learn a little about China when Mao was in power and how different the world was for the Chinese people. I’m certain they will be asking you lots of questions. My two were especially interested in the little red books, who Mao was and whether everyone in China was poor. For this reason, I think it would be suitable for children aged 7-8 and above.
As we walked out of the theatre and into the foyer, my son looked up at me and said “You know mum, wanting something isn’t enough, is it? You have to work really hard. You have to practice. You have to be stronger“. I think Li Cunxin would be pleased.
The Peasant Prince is in session at the LendLease Darling Quarter Theatre until 20 April before heading off on it’s national tour. You can source tickets and venues here. When you attend, make sure you add your wish to the kite’s tail in the foyer.
Looks amazing. I’m sure I’d love it.
You should go! I really enjoyed it.
