Having fallen in love with the Ice Age franchise all over again after viewing Cosmic Scrat-tastrophe during a recent trip to the movies, Miss N was super excited to head off to Ice Age Live! A Mammoth Adventure over the weekend. I was unsure what to expect but she kept reassuring me that it was going to be amazing. How could it not be when the movies were so awesome.
Ice Age Live! A Mammoth Adventure is a new story based on the first three movies which sees baby mammoth Peaches kidnapped by Shadow, a rather nasty bird. Our favourite trio, Manny the woolly mammoth, Sid the motor-mouthed sloth and Diego the sabre-toothed tiger set off with the opossum twins to rescue her. It’s a story that is easy to follow and will have the kids mesmerised from start to finish,
When we first revealed that Ice Age Live! A Mammoth Adventure was coming to Sydney, I wrote that I was super impressed to discover that Cirque du Soleil’s first artistic director, Guy Caron, is one of the co directors of the production alongside Michael Curry . But how did this translate to ice?
The puppets and costumes are truly amazing, designed and built in the Michael Curry’s Los Angeles studio. I was unsure how the characters we know and love in the animations could become a three dimension character on ice. Michael is a wizard when it comes to costumes and puppetry, weaving his magic to bring them to life. They even lip-synch accurately!
Guy Caron’s touch is evident across the choreography on both ice and in the air. The aerial acrobatics are incredible. I watched on, holding my breathe, as Shadow the bird literally tumbled through the air metres above the ice on little more than a thread of string. Caron is able to push the boundaries of reality and create movement that is almost unimaginable. He’s even managed to lend from martial art disciplines for all the fighting scenes.
Miss N is 7 years old and loved the show. It was a little too young for Master R who is almost 10 now, although he enjoyed all the scenes that featured aerial work and martial arts. I think the production would be suitable for preschool aged children up to 7-8 years.
