Documenting our family adventures is something that I am extremely passionate about. I write, photograph and collect mementos, storing them in catalogue boxes which I draw out to revisit with the kids months (and sometimes years) after we’ve returned home. They instantly transport out minds back to our trip and help prompt some of the learnings we experienced.
My kids have been reluctant at documenting our own adventures but I think that’s all about to change with the new resources from Lonely Planet Kids. The Lonely Planet Kids – My Travel Journal and the Lonely Planet Kids – My Family Travel Map appeared in our mail box a few weeks ago and were an instant hit. Miss N has been busily filling the ‘pre-trip’ activities in the journal in anticipation of our big trip to Japan (which is months away!) and Master R has put the map up in his room, referring to it each night as he maps his own personal Bucket List. I thought they would lose interest by now but no, they keep going back.

The Lonely Planet Kids – My Family Travel Map is the type of resource I love. Around 18 months ago I placed a large world map on the kids bedroom wall. We started a game, before bed, where I yell out a country and they need to find it on the map. As time passed, they became quite good at it and we added cities. It’s a lot of fun. You could easily do this with this version PLUS it comes with 180 colourful stickers so you could also identify their favourite places and dream destinations. The stickers are in different shades so you could allocate each family member their own colour! It’s a good size and it also folds back into a robust book for storing when you’re not using it.

Lonely Planet Kids : My Travel Journal
I’ve always kept my a travel journal where I’ve reflected on my adventures, pasted mementos and made little notes to remember in the future. I have longed for my kids to keep a journal too and have tried a plethora of options over our travels which have never really been successful. When we received the Lonely Planet Kids – My Travel Journal I was skeptical that it would have any really allure. How wrong I was! You see, Lonely Planet Kids have guessed that not all kids are going to fill a blank book with their travel memories without a scaffold. My Travel Journal is brimming with writing topic suggestions, lists to complete, ideas for getting the creative juices flowing and lots more fill-in fun. It’s like an activity book but hooks the the reader in and leads them to reflect on upcoming adventures or adventures past in a fun and engaging way. Already miss N has used it to create her “packing” list for our trip to Japan and map out her proposed itinerary. It has prompted her to research where we are going and she keeps opening it for more ideas each night.
