Up early on a Saturday morning and wishing the laundry, dusting, vacuuming and all those other domestic chores would disappear? I’ve found the perfect solution. Dress the kids, herd them out to the car and head straight to The Picnic Burwood for breakfast. Sure, sure….you may find everything waiting for you when you get back home, but perhaps your partner will have completed them all by the time you get home (wistful thinking?).
Last Saturday, Miss N and I headed to The Picnic Burwood for breakfast. I needed the treat after a rather massive week at work. The cafe is conveniently located on the corner of Burwood Road and Park Avenue. Whilst parking was ticketed, it was pretty easy to source along the road closest to the cafe (you can also park in Westfields where it is free for the first few hours). In no times we were seated under a heater ready to work through the menu and make our selection.
The Picnic Burwood plays on its namesake with the dining area fitted out like an all day picnic area. For the last week or two, Sydney has been a little cold, so heaters and cafe blinds have been utilised to keep diners warm. There’s lot of gorgeous natural light (it is a covered outside dining area, after wall) and greenery has been used to reinforce the “picnic in the park” feeling. Burst of yellow in the Mexican oilcloth cushions, the bicycle outside and the tableware provide a summer feel (even in winter). With the playground a mere 50 metres or so away, I look forward to grabbing a table at the back when the weather is warmer so I can sit and watch the kids while sipping one of the amazing concoctions The Picnic Burwood offers.
The menu. Where can I start? I wanted every.single.item. Everything sounded amazing when I read it out loud. It made me think of a nano version of The Grounds of Alexandria. I decided, since I was spoiling myself, to try the Not So French Toast which features coco-pops, Persian fairy floss, mascarpone cheese, and seasonal berries (including the BIGGEST blueberries I have ever seen). I was quite impressed with the Kids Menu and opted for the scrambled eggs with bacon for Miss N (it was a little over $8.00 from memory – look how generous the serving was!).
The Kids Menu is delightfully simple and all under $10.00. There’s Bear Toast (peanut butter smothered toast with bananas and blueberry added to create the face); Yoginola (muesli, yoghurt and fruit) and a few other options. I was pleased to see that each option includes fruit. We will go back simply for this budget friendly menu as I know the kids will eat something from it every single time AND it’s fairly healthy.
The Picnic Burwood is open for breakfast and lunch daily with both a dine in and takeaway option available. If you’re super keen, you can preorder a picnic hamper and blanket for a ‘real’ picnic in the park. Currently the cafe does not have a website but you can head to the Picnic Burwood Facebook page for their latest news.
