Fruit Picking With Kids : Where To Go Near Sydney

Fruit Picking With Kids : Where To Go Near Sydney

If you’ve been reading the Kid Bucket List for a while, you’ll know that  fruit picking with kids is something we embark on a few times a year. It is actually one of our favourite activities that the whole family loves to do as often as we can. Preferably before the crowds converge.

These days our society seems to be built on convenience and instant fixes. Need a mango out of season? No problem, head to your local supermarket. Fruit today is likely to be on the shelf after being in cold storage since it was picked off the tree. For this reason, many kids today have no idea which fruit grows in which season, or even where fruit has been sourced. I think fruit picking with kids is an incredible teaching moment, and if you’re in Sydney I have the perfect places for you to head!

Apples can be picked from the tree from summer through to autumn. While the Hawkesbury seems to be the most popular for Sydneysiders, heading south also seems to be growing a nice little reputation for fruit picking.

  1. So far we have only tried berry picking at the start of summer near Melbourne. I’d love to try some fruit picking in orchards like this. It’s such a great way to teach kids that fruit comes from trees or vines, and not just the supermarket.

  2. I didn’t realise Chestnuts were big up there too. We have a local ‘Chestnut Festival’ down here in Victoria. Fruit picking is an excellent activity for kids.
