Virtual Room Australia : VR Experience for Kids

Both Sunshine and Striker are at that age where they want a little more independence around the experiences we engage in as a family. Finding activities for tweens and teenagers that they’re happy to enjoy with mum and dad can be challenging to find. Discovering Virtual Room Australia and their VR Experience for Kids totally nailed it for our family, and we now have an activity that they want to return to again and again. It is the perfect thing to do in Sydney with teens, the perfect thing to do in Melbourne with teens.

I was a little apprehensive about Virtual Room Australia with kids, concerned that VR was yet another opportunity for the kids to lose themself in gaming with little interaction with others. I was quite surprised by the overall experience and thoroughly enjoyed working with the kids to complete each level of the game – it had to be done in partnership, there was no solo movement in this game.

What is Virtual Room Australia?

Virtual Room Australia is a team-based virtual reality experience. To complete any of the experiences you need 2 or more players – you can’t do this solo!  Based on the escape room concept, players are immersed in a virtual world through a 3D cinematic experience where each player needs to contribute to working through the stage.

Each player is physically in their own dedicated room, however, in the game they join their group members to walk around, bend, open items, throw objects and collaborate together to solve the puzzles and challenges that present themselves along the way.

What is the set up like?

Virtual Rooms are set up to ensure the safety of each player. Each player is provided with their own 3m x 3m room from which they join the virtual world. While players interact with each other in the virtual world, seeing, hearing, touching one and other, there is no ‘real’ touch.

All controllers and headsets are sanitised before each use and players wear a soft, single-use disposable ninja mask so there is no direct touch of the headset. Whilst the game master supports each player to put on the equipment, there is no physical interaction.

Virtual Room is a dedicated premise with a limit of 20 people on-site at any one time. With each player in their own room for the length of the game, the interaction between individuals is very limited.

How long does a session last?

We set aside an hour for our experience. A word of warning – while the game takes between 40-50 minutes once you’re in the game,  time changes. Before you know it, the game concludes and it is time to exit.
