Sunshine Reads: Books for Teens Winter 2022

Sunshine is becoming quite a bibliophile with a growing TBR pile and wishlist that continues to grow. Over the last month, she has read almost 10 novels and has created a great book list for the young teen in your life. She continues to be quite broad in her choices, however, I have noted a movement toward drama and romance genres.

As with our other Sunshine Reads Books for Teens, we do have some affiliate links which means we receive a small commission if you decide to purchase any of the books.

Sunshine Reads: Books for Teens Winter 2022

I did say that Sunshine has quite an eclectic taste in books, but when I look through this season’s selection they all seem to have romance in common, although some are comedy, some are dystopian etc.

The Museum of Broken Things

A great find by Sunshine! Written by Melbourne author Lauren Draper, The Museum of Broken Things tackles the complexity of high school relationships as well as grief. The story centres around Reece, the young protagonist who has just moved to Hamilton and misses everything she has left behind. Upon inheriting a strange artefact from her Grandmother, she begins to unravel a mystery that might change how she sees everything…

Wylah : The Koorie Warrior Book 1

Inspired by First Nations history and grounded in culture, Wylah probably fits best in the fantasy genre. When Wylah’s family is stolen by the dragon army, she must find the courage to set out on a journey to save them – but what will it take for her to become a warrior?

Finding Jupiter

With Sunshine studying Romeo and Juliet as part of her Year 8 English studies, Finding Jupiter came along at the right time. When Ray and Orion meet at the roller rink, sparks fly but now it seems like something in their families’ past will stand in their way, and cross their stars forever…

The Silver Arrow

A rip-roaring adventure from desert plains to snow-covered mountains and everything in between. Packed with exciting creatures from the indignant porcupine to the lost polar bear and the adorable baby pangolin, The Silver Arrow is a classic story about saving our endangered animals and the places they live.

A Quiet Kind of Thunder

Steffi, the female hero of our A Quiet Kind of Thunder, suffers from anxiety that has rendered her a selective mute, and in her words, invisible. Rhys is the new boy at school, and Steffi feels that for the first time in a long time, she is seen. Rhys is deaf, so he doesn’t need to hear her, but around him she feels like she may be able to find her voice again. It is a love story.

Anna and the French Kiss

This one must be good as Sunshine literally refused to leave the couch until she finished it! In her final year of school, Anna’s after unexpectedly whisks her off to boarding school in Paris. She’s not thrilled at all, until she meets Etienne St. Clair. Probem is, he already has a girlfriend. I’m sensing some Emily in Paris vibes.

Heartstopper

Sunshine and I started watching the series together, but after watching episode 1 I hit pause and we agreed to read the books first (books before shows!). Boy meets boy. Boys become friends. Boys fall in love. It’s cute and whimsical, whilst exploring consent, mental health, friendship and loyalty. It’s one we’re reading and watching together so we unpack some of the themes together.
