Sitting on the north-west foothills of the Snowy Mountains, Tumut NSW is a lazy rural township in the Riverina area perfect for a long weekend or even an extended stay. 

There are so many things to do in Tumut with kids, or without. From swimming to canoeing, fishing to hiking and biking, there are so many things to enjoy. Make sure you check out the thermal pool!

Tumut Region Visitor Centre

Visit Tumut NSW

The Tumut Region Visitor Centre is a great first stop as it provides the most current information and resources on the Tumut Region including the Kosciuszko National Park.

Tumut Broom Factory

Handmaking millet brooms since 1946, the Tumut Broom Factory was one of our most interesting stops in Tumut. It was here that we were able to watch a broom being made from start to finish – and we bought it home too!

Tumut River Walk

The Tumut River Walk is a delightful trek alongside the river through some of Tumut’s parks, as well at the Tumut Wetlands. There are numerous access points. 

The Tumut River is a popular fishing spot.

Adelong Falls Gold Mill Ruins

Situated 20 kilometres from Tumut, the Adelong Falls Gold Mill Ruins is a NSW-listed heritage industrial site. 

Originally part of the Adelong Creek Goldfield, it is an incredible place to visit. Opening on 17 July 1870, a Reefer Battery was established at the location, designed to extract gold from its bearing ore. It continued to run until 1910.

Today you can visit and explore the Adelong Falls Gold Mill Ruins which today comprise of two water wheels with associated weirs, races and aqueducts; a 24-foot buddle; a series of holding tanks; a small quarry; a reverberatory furnace with a separate brick stack; a weighbridge; a works office; a cottage with a terraced garden; a metalled entry road with stone revetments; three paths and an unidentified terrace.

Whilst the ruins are along the river and not accessible by wheelchair, there is a fantastic viewing platform a short walk from the car war which is accessible.

Blowering Dam

Blowering Dam is one of the biggest dams in NSW and stores water released upstream for hydroelectricity generation in the Snowy Mountains Scheme. It is absolutely magnificent.

In 1978, Blowering Dam became the site of the world’s water-speed record. Today it is a popular spot for water recreational activities and fishing. The dam is stocked with Murray cod, golden perch and silver perch. Trout are also present. 

The access road to Blowering Dam is a short drive south of Tumut.

Tumut Community Labyrinth For Peace

The Tumut Labyrinth is located in Tumut’s Pioneer Park and has been constructed in the shape of an octagon with seven layers of path using Wee Jasper bluestone.

The labyrinth was developed with the aim of providing tranquillity to those that walk its path through contemplation.

A feature of the labyrinth are ancient circular stones that are positioned on the path, to reflect their location in the sky above on Armistice Day, 11th November 1918.

Tumut & District Historical Society Museum

Opening at the present site back in 1979, the Tumut and District Historical Society Museum has curated a collection of fascinating items including Miles Franklin memorabilia, Historical Photographic Collection and items of agricultural machinery relating to the Tumut district.

Yarrangobilly Caves and Thermal Pool

The Yarrangobilly Caves found its way onto our bucket list as soon as we learned that the area boasted a thermal pool. I mean, what’s not to love? When planning our trip to Tumut with kids I knew that it had to be added to our itinerary.

Hidden deep within the Kosciuszko National Park, the Yarrangobilly Caves and Thermal Pool offer visitors an opportunity to explore a number of caves before cooling off (or warming up) in the thermal pool.

See the Snowy Mountain Brumbies

The Man from Snowy River Tumut

If you have ever watched (or read) The Man From Snowy River you would be aware that brumbies, or wild horses, run free in the Kosciuszko National Park. Whilst they are feral animals, they are quite interesting to see. 

Brumbies can be spotted all around the Snowy Mountains, usually where there are grasslands. We spotted them at the flats above the Yarrangobilly Caves and Thermal Pool.

One of favourite things to do on a trip to a rural township is to source local produce. Fruit picking and farm gates is something we always research. The Tumut area is abundant with choices.

Yesteryear Plantations Eucalyptus Oil Distillers

Established in 1951, Yesteryear Plantations Eucalyptus Oil Distillers produces unique Australian ‘Radiata’ Variant E Eucalyptus Oil mountain variant as well as Rosewood’s Broad Leaf Peppermint ‘Dives’ Eucalyptus Oi. 

The plantation offers tours – just make sure you give them a call beforehand. .

Head to Tumut River Market Gardens for ​​fresh produce and eggs.

Mouats Farm

Head to Mouats Farm to source farm fresh produce cherries, apples and other fruits in season plus fresh free range eggs, homemade jams and more.

The Apple Thief – Cider House

Head to the Apple Thief to sample and purchase a large variety of farm produce and the premium ciders which are made with pure fruit juice, so every cider is 100 percent fruit and 100 percent natural.

Gilmore Braes Heritage Beef

Gilmore Braes Heritage Beef is the home of a herd of Scottish Highland cattle. On the first Sunday of the month the team hold a Meet the Beef Tour for visitors. The tour includes lunch so bookings are essential.

Tumut River Brewing Co was one of our favourite spots to eat in Tumut. The menu is pretty basic when it comes to food: pizza , burgers, salads and bar snacks. As a microbrewery, it has much to offer with 24 rotating taps.

Three Blue Ducks At Nimbo Fork

Three Blue Ducks Nimbo is surrounded by spectacular landscapes and breath taking views is located at Nimbo Fork Lodge. It’s a little pricey for a casual family lunch, but a great choice for a special occasion.
