Finding activities for the kids to do with YOU as they move into the tween and teen age bracket can be a little tricky unless it includes screens, their friends or … screens. However, art has an uncanny tendency to pull people together so the idea of splatter art at Kaboo Studio was something I was keen to try with Sunshine so jumped at their invitation to give it a try.
Fun at Kaboo Studios in Bondi Junction
Table of Contents
Kaboo Studios in Bondi Junction offers you and the kids an opportunity to “splash, splatter, spray, flick, drip and throw paint onto a stretched canvas to create your own unique painting to take home”. It sounded fun. I didn’t realise HOW much fun it would be.
As a busy mum, I can’t think of the last time that I engaged in uninhibited creative fun. Such fun is messy, and usually that means that I have to clean up afterwards. I tend to avoid adding to any cleaning tasks. The kids can get messy, but I stop with me. Kaboo Studios was liberating.
Uninhibited Fun for the kids … and you!
On arrival at Kaboo Studios the team will provide you a short induction, explaining the rules (basically, splatter and throw the paint anywhere but at each other!), the tools (syringe, a range of brushes, trowels and more) and some pattern tutorials.
Next, the team will help you to kit up, providing a poncho, foot booties (who wants paint on their white Converse! Sunshine did not risk it!), and goggles. It might not look trendy but it will protect your clothing from the splatter of paint.
It’s then time to start. I started cautiously, creating a background before grabbing the tools and experimenting. I noted all of the kids around me joyfully splattering the paint against their canvas. I realised that I was holding myself back, focused on creating something perfect. As this awareness became apparent I made a decision to get lost in the process and not the end product.
And Just Like That I Understood the Value of Art Therapy…
Throughout the process, at Kaboo Studios I had to remember to stop overthinking. My mind kept floating back to creating a masterpiece. I had to push back and remind myself to enjoy the process. There is a certain freedom in spontaneous paint throwing. It took me back to my childhood.
It wasn’t long before I was flooded with joy. Unbridled joy. I was having fun. I was in a state of bliss, freed from the shackles of needing to be perfect, in creating what I thought might be expected. I had no idea that art could be so … therapeutic. It was *almost* as awesome as a massage.
Back to the Kids Experience
What was originally a Kid Bucket List experience for the kids turned out to be an incredible experience for me too. It was oh so much fun and both Sunshine and her friend have asked to return. Of course, I will be trudging along with them as I LOVE this experience so much.
So mums (and dads….aunts, uncles…all you adults) add Kaboo Studio to your activity list for the kids and make sure you book a spot for YOURSELF too! It’s so much fun.
A Word on Parking
Anyone driving to Bondi Junction will be worried about where to park. Sydney, after all, is not known for its cheap parking options.
Driving into Bondi Junction, we tossed up between parking at Westfields where we would get a few hours of parking, or Wilson Parking on Grosvenor Street which had all day $15 parking on the weekend and provided space to go to lunch and shop (a teen favourite activity) after our Kaboo experience.
