Bubble Planet: An Immersive Experience with Kids

Ever since we visited teamLab Borderless in Tokyo, the kids have been chasing a similar immersive experience. They enjoyed the Met Art World in Melbourne, but it was teeny tiny. And then we learned about Fever’s new Bubble Planet: An Immersive Experience!

After sell-out seasons in Milan, Los Angeles, London and Brussels, Bubble Planet has landed in Sydney! Offering 10 immersive rooms to engage your senses as you wander through them, this immersive experience with its massive installations, projections and illusions will have you gasping in disbelief. It is a sensory wonderland!

As someone who can experience sensory overload, particularly with crowds, I found that the team kept the numbers in the rooms flowing, so I never felt crowded.

Don’t rush the rooms. Take a breath and settle into the experience. I was thankful that I had my Loops on me so I could drown out voices and just enjoy the background music.  This was especially helpful in the large balloon room (I am terrified of popping balloons, as are the kids).

So what did the kids love? EVERYTHING! They can run wild here as every room has been developed with interaction in mind.

The Rooms

After walking through the rainbow arches into an Underwater Room, we had fun walking on water while a range of sea life, such as turtles and sharks, swam beneath us. If we accidentally touched one, they quickly moved away. Tech at its best – the kids were squealing with delight.

Next up was a Bubble Ocean. This was a room, ahem, ‘ocean’ of giant floating pink balloons. I must admit that I was terrified they would pop (further exacerbated by seeing a worker standing outside with a pump and spare balloons at the ready to replace any that went amiss). I decided to slide my feet around the room to prevent any pops. The kids surrounding me loved throwing the balloons everywhere; it was so much fun that they squealed!

I reluctantly moved on to the next room – a Giant Bubble Dome. If I were to visit the moon (Katy Perry travelled to space, so it is possible, right?) Earth might look a little like the dome that appeared before me. It was mesmerising, walking around it, I discovered a doorway into another room. This was an excellent space. Find yourself a sensory pod and lay back and enjoy the visual projections. Don’t fall asleep!

I soon found myself in an interactive space perfect for selfies or images for social. There was a bit of a line here, so I rushed through. You’ll find a swing, a space to capture yourself in a giant bubble, a bathtub full of rubber duckies and more.

The massive pink bubble bath-themed ball pit was a hoot. Did you ever experience a dread of quicksand when you were growing up? If so, you are a child of the 80s, as it appears in every single show. Well, I had a flashback to that fear when, after throwing myself backwards into the balls, I  slowly sank whilst my family giggled in glee. Just another example of how I am entirely committed to curating fun family memories!

I love a good illusion, so the Infinity Room was one of my favourite spaces. It was here that we discovered that spaces can go on, and on, and on. So good! Others rushed this space, I stopped and watched myself in the mirrors as everything around me changed.

If you’ve ever wanted to try Virtual Reality, you’ll love the VR swinging pods. Take a breather and be transported into another world, a bubble world, as you swing on the pod. I was a little worried about motion sickness, but it was fine.

A kid at heart, I was so delighted to experience the Soapy Bubbles Room, where the room fills with real, soapy bubbles. The ceiling and walls spat out litres and litres of real bubbles. They rained down on me.

The next couple of rooms are geared towards kids. There is a sketch and post space where the kids can colour a range of art worlds and then bring them to life on a projected underwater visual. And there is an interactive games area where the kids will need to blow up virtual bubbles and more to play the game.

The Verdict

I adore interactive spaces, and we spent around 90 minutes exploring Bubble Planet. Tee is convinced that the experience is quite pricey for a family of four (just under $140.00 for a family of 4) before counting parking/public transport. However, I think for 90 minutes and lots of opportunities for family bonding, it would be a good, special occasion experience. Make sure to use our discount!!
