I remember when the Stak Hat was introduced to my vernacular in the 80s. Initially, everyone thought it was a little dorky until we all realised that it was essential to protect our brains, and we all started wearing bike helmets. The same thing is likely to happen with ear protection.
Perfecting Sensory Adjustments
Table of Contents
As someone who requires several sensory adjustments to access different spaces comfortably, I was thrilled to learn about Loop Earplugs last year. Before this discovery, I had either avoided specific spaces, used disposable earplugs, or simply masked my discomfort when it came to noise. Lawn mowers, hand dryers, crowded spaces, and loud music are just some of the noises that can impact my wellbeing.
When Sunshine hit her mid-teens, I also realised that concerts were a great way to bond, and we started heading off to see some pretty amazing artists. Previously, I would have avoided this, reluctant to experience the overwhelming fog that comes with the high noise levels. Enter my Loops. Wearing Loops at concerts not only protects my ears but also allows me to enjoy the music with Sunshine. Huzzah!

So, Who Developed Loops?
Loops were developed by Dimitri O and Maarten Bodewes in 2016, two individuals with tinnitus who were searching for an earplug that offered protection, comfort, and style, allowing them to enjoy live music. They were unable to find one that checked all three areas, so they created Loops to meet their need.
Initially, Loops were all about enjoying concerts and live music events. However, as Loops became increasingly popular, there was pressure from fans for Dimitri and Maarten to develop earplugs to support either noisy environments or sleep.
I am relatively sure that the idea of using Loops to support sensory needs was a byproduct rather than something the team considered with clear intent; however, it has been revolutionary for me to the extent that my school also provides these to students who may need them in class. They are that effective!
How Do Loops Work?
I am no scientist and know little about how sound waves work and what Loops do, which means I have had to lean on the Loop team to explain what acoustic resonance actually means.
I have learned that Loops don’t just block out sound. They are much more sophisticated than the earplugs you receive when visiting a factory or other loud noise venue. The technology inside the Loops makes them special. They have 3 key features:
Acoustic Resonance
I have no idea how this works, but I have learned that sound waves enter the Loops via a small opening. The sound waves then travel through the hollow channel on the inside of the Loop. This is approximately the same length as your ear canal and is called the acoustic resonator. It has a quarter-wavelength resonance at 2700 Hz. It mimics your ears’ function, ensuring that sound remains natural when heard.
That is all gobblygook to me, so if you can explain it in a way we can all understand, please write it in the comments.
Advanced Filter
At the end of the sound tube, Loop have placed an acoustic filter which lowers all frequencies equally.
Closing the Ear Canal
Each Loop comes with ear tips in a number of sizes. It is crucial that you identify your size and fit them accurately to your ear. You want to have a complete seal.
How to find the best Loops for you
It can be quite overwhelming deciding which Loops will suit you best. I found it so tricky that I settled on the Switch 2 as it has three options, but I think the Engage would have been helpful too.
My suggestion is to head over to the Loops quiz, which will walk you through the options and, through a series of questions, help you identify what suits you best.
