The Annual Agricultural Show has a strange allure. I have been drawn to them since primary school when I was introduced to the Kyneton Show in Victoria when my family moved to the country. My class entered a tapestry that we had all contributed to; a vast number of vegetables from our own class garden; and, we also exhibited a few chickens and sheep (Hampshire Down ewes to be exact). We took home a few ribbons and so began my love affair.
I love the sound of a show, the boisterous laughter of children watching pigs race, the silence of the show ring and the enormous pumpkins that always seem to arrive, or at least displayed, on wooden wagons. The rides don’t interest me that much but the food- oh the food! Homemade jams, cakes and delights. The latest show food (the Dagwood dog is so 1980s theses days) and showbags always intrigue me.
For the last few years we have delighted the kids with an annual trip to the Camden Show. We have also visited Picton and Moss Vale for their show too. We love to sit in the stand and watch the entries in the various categories. It’s so much fun.
Of course we negotiate with the kids what thy can delight in beyond the exhibits before we arrive: a Showbag each, a joint ride (perhaps the Ferris wheel) that we choose and 1 selection each. We leave these to last and usually go home after the final ride. I’m sure we will stay for the fireworks as the get older and don’t tire as quickly.
This year we are heading to the Sydney Royal Easter Show thanks to the Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) of NSW. It is running from 26 March – 8 April, 2015. It’s our family’s first visit as we have previously thought it might be too overwhelming with the crowds – it is Australia’s largest annual event attracting over 900,000 each year. We’re off to find out if it’s as awesome as everyone tells us and I’m busy researching all I can to make sure our day is stress free.
THIS COMPETITION HAS NOW CLOSED
Whilst the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW are providing both a pass for me to giveaway and a pass to allow my family to enjoy the show as well, we have not been obligated to cover the event at all. Of course, like all adventures we take we love documenting them on the Kid Bucket List.
