Riding a bike is a skill, once learned, that is rarely lost. Learning how to ride is the difficult part. When I was a kid I had neither a balance bike nor training wheels. I pushed my new bike out onto our lawn and went from there. The beauty of living in the country, right? It was a little different for my kids. Our block of land isn’t exactly level and our road is definitely not the place to learn. We scouted for parks that would provide a safe place to learn to ride a bike and have been heading back ever since.
Sydney Park Bike Track has been one of our favourite places for the kids to ride their bikes for the last few years. It’s easily accessible with lots of free parking, and along with its awesome bike track has an equally cool playground just over the hill. For most of the past year, a large section of the park adjacent to the bike track has been cordoned off to the public. This month the barriers came down and an extension to bike track was revealed. We had to visit!
On Sunday 15 November, 2015 the Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, officially opened the new bike track. It has wider paths, lots of new turns and bumps, and even a refuelling station (you’ll need to use your imagination for it to work). It is THE place to learn how to ride your bike and put it through its moves here in Sydney. The kids loved all the new features including the shop front which Miss N thinks will be the perfect place for her to offload sell some homemade lemonade and cupcakes next time we visit. Parents will be impressed to find that there is lots of shade and both barbecue facilities and picnic areas alongside the track.
If you are in Sydney and looking for the perfect place to take your kid to learn how to ride a bike or just to have a pedal, Sydney Park Bike Track in St Peters is your place. On Saturday’s, Sydney Cycleways offer free tutorials and use of their balance bikes too.
