First established in Tempe back in 1986, the Sydney Bus Museum is now housed in the Old Tramshed at Leichhardt.

This incredible museum features Australia’s largest collection of historic double deckers and your entry fee includes unlimited trips on one to the QVB on the day you visit. This must make Sydney Bus Museum with Kids the perfect adventure to learn about Sydney buses.

The Sydney Bus Museum is a not-for-profit organisation which boasts over 250 members who are committed to preserving the incredible collection of buses spanning back to the 1920s. Many of these Sydney buses would be familiar to Sydneysiders.
We arrived at the Sydney Bus Museum unsure of what to expect. We drove up just as one of the vintage double deckers was departing to the QVB. The kids mouths dropped in awe and they both quickly asked if we could go for a ride too. Leaving every 20 minutes or so throughout the day, we knew we would have plenty of opportunities to ride into the city.

On entering the Sydney Bus Museum with kids we were met by a conductor who opened his leather ticket holder to grab our tickets. Both Sunshine and Striker found the paper tickets fascinating, both only ever knowing the Opal card on Sydney Buses that we’ve used.
We then moved into the museum and were astonished to see so many buses on display. (click to view the entire collection) Most of the buses have been restored to their original glory and kids are welcome to hop into many of them.
Exploring the Sydney Bus Museum with kids will take you back in time to when Sydney Buses were largely manual operated. You’ll be able to slide the doors by hand, honk horns and generally observe how things worked. It;s a great way for kids to see how technology has advanced.
Our most favourite part of our adventure to the Sydney Bus Museum was our trip to the QVB on a vintage double decker. The kids made a beeline for the top level and sat right at the front. Whilst there was no air conditioning, opening the windows did a good job keeping us cool. This is a must if you have a chance to explore the site.
Open every first and third Sunday of the month, I would suggest arriving around the museum’s 10.00 am opening to secure yourself a park. There is limited parking on site, with street parking available once it fills.
