Every single summer we head to Melbourne over the summer holidays. As such we have become quite familiar with all it has to offer and the kids pretty much feel like they’ve seen it all. But this year a new experience came along. The Rain Room Melbourne with kids became one of the most unique experiences we’ve done as a family and we all loved it! And it’s back for the summer school holidays 2020/2021!
What is the Rain Room Melbourne?
Table of Contents
The Rain Room Melbourne is an immersive art installation where guests enter a space and are confronted with a downpour of continuous rain. However, the magic occurs when you start walking through the rain and discover that you don’t get wet (if you follow the rules anyway).
What magic is this? Well, technology. There are a handful of motion sensors installed within the space that detect the movement of the human body and halt the drops of rain in that space. You can move through the darkened room, escaping the deluge of rain.
The Rain Room installation was created by Random International and has been brought to the Southern Hemisphere and installed in its own bespoke space at the Jackalope Pavilion in St Kilda, Melbourne. It is 100 square metres in size and enagages all senses. It responds to you through the aide of technology.
Rain Room Melbourne with Kids
We visited with children. They both followed the rules to begin with but within 5 minutes realised that if they moved a little faster or moved within a metre of each other, the rain fell on them. As the temperature had climbed above 40 degrees outside, the cool relief of the rain was perfection in itself. They had an absolute blast.
During the school holidays, the Rain Room Melbourne is offering kid-friendly sessions. Touted to be sessions specifically designed for kids, I think they are the sessions where if you break the rules it’s okay. You see, kids don’t really like walking through rain and NOT getting wet.
Sunshine and Striker started the session walking slowly up and down the 100 metre square space. Slowly they walked closer to each other resulting in a little splat of rain. They giggled. They didn’t get into trouble. Striker reached out and “tagged” Sunshine, and then it was on. They were running through the rain. They were stomping. They were laughing. They were saturated.
If you are visiting with the kids, make sure you take a change of clothes and some towels. Kid’s sessions are designed for families with children 12 years and under. Rain Room will not admit children unaccompanied under the age of 16.
These special sessions are running throughout the summer holidays.
How to Stay Dry in the Rain Room Melbourne
If you follow the rules you are unlikely to get wet. Move slowly across the Rain Room. Avoid wearing dark, shiny or reflective fabric and make sure you have flat shoes on. Maintain around 2 metres distance between yourself and others. You may find a few drops hit you, but you should stay fairly dry.
