Strawberry Picking Around Australia : Find a Strawberry Farm Near Me

Picked right, the Strawberry is one of the most satisfying fruits to munch on. Across coastal Australia, you can find pick your own at a plethora of Strawberry farms. Strawberry picking each season has become one of our favourite activities with the kids. To help you find a Strawberry Farm where you can pick your own, we’ve pulled them together in this easy to follow resource.

Why Go Strawberry Picking?

Strawberry Picking Around Australia : Find a Strawberry Farm Near Me

Strawberries seem to be quite plentiful in Australia, and often sold quite cheaply in supermarkets and fruit shops, so why go strawberry picking with the kids?

From my observation, it is becoming quite common for children to be quite oblivious to where common produce originates. I have asked a number of kids in schools “where can we find strawberries?” and a resounding number have replied “the supermarket!”. I find this quite confronting and have worked hard to expose my children to a range of experiences to increase their knowledge of the natural world outside our home, school, and our built environment.

Strawberry picking is an activity that directly provides a hands-on experience in how food is grown, picked and consumed. It is both fun and highly rewarding – especially if we can have a few cheeky taste tests along the way. Through strawberry picking my kids know that strawberries often end up in punnets AFTER they are picked at the farm.

How to Pick Strawberries

Strawberry Picking Around Australia : Find a Strawberry Farm Near Me

When visiting a pick your own strawberry farm you will usually be provided with a bucket and then directed to a section of the paddock to pick your strawberries. Rarely are you provided with detailed instructions on how to pick the strawberries. Whilst they are usually quite hardy, picking them right is more likely to ensure they aren’t bruised and can keep a little longer in your fridge.

Choose Your Strawberry Carefully

The first misconception is that strawberries will ripen once you’ve picked them. It is important to note that the ripening process is halted as soon as you pick them so choose plump, firm, bright red berries. Size doesn’t really matter.

Picking Strawberries from the Plant

Your strawberry picking technique is fairly important. I find that I can do this quite easily with my own hand, but it can be a little fiddly for kids so they may need help.

Using my dominant hand, I place the strawberry in my palm and grip the stem between my thumb and index finger around a centimeter or a little more above the berry. Using the nails of my thumb and index finger I then pinch the stem to sever it, whilst twisting the strawberry. Done right, it should detach readily for the bucket.

When to go Strawberry Picking

Strawberry Picking Around Australia : Find a Strawberry Farm Near Me

Strawberries are usually available from October to May each year.

Facilities

I think it is important to mention that many of the farms are commercial sites and were not originally set up for pick your own visitors. In our experience, this often means that the facilities are lacking and often consist of port-a-loos. Do not arrive expecting to use EFTPOS.

We always pack lunch and snacks, whilst also bringing our drinks along as it is a rare farm where such items are available for purchase.

We strongly suggest trying to source bathrooms BEFORE you go to the farm or holding on until you leave even when they have portaloos (strawberry picking is generally from spring through to summer. Imagine the portaloos!!)
