Over the last few years, it has become apparent that Sydney councils are investing in more Sydney playgrounds and play spaces for children and their families. Gigantic climbing frames and long slides have become fashionable and it’s also exciting to see these spaces becoming more inclusive. Oatley Park Adventure Playspace is the latest playground to have undergone a redevelopment and we popped over to have a play.

When it comes to parks, most parents want the playspace to tick a few boxes to ensure their return: enough space and activities to keep their kids engaged, safety (of course), parking, toilets and shade. Oatley Park Adventure Playspace if the first playground to completley tick all the boxes for our family, guaranteeing our return again and again.
Oatley Park Adventure Playground Key Areas
The architects of Oatley Park Adventure Playground have gone to great lengths to incorporate the new build into the stunning natural landscape. Constructed predominatley from natural materials, the playspace blends into the park’s natural bushland setting with an intentional movement away from plastic, rubber and other fabricated materials typically seen in new playgrounds these days. It’s a little reminicent of Centennial Park’s WILD PLAY space, another of our Sydney Playground favourites.

Climbing Structure
The Climbing structure at Oatley Park Adventure Playground is quite incredible. It’s three levels high and is interwoven with additional spaces for play. It features worm tunnels, two slides (a small slide and the large tube slide), climbing nets, pommels, gangplanks and a range of decks. It is fun. It is safe. It is usually quite crowded at the top as it is where all the kids head, patiently waiting for their time to go down the slide.

Flying Fox
The flying fox features two lines, one your general all purpose seat and the other a chair with 3 point safety harness. It is long. It goes fast. It is suitable for toddlers and upwards due to the inclusion of the chair.
Toddler Play
While toddlers love to climb and swing, they often prefer a sensory activity which will no doubt lead them to the toddler play space which has a large sandpit area, miniature swings, musical equipment, and a large shady covering.
Swing Play
The swing play space is set away from the main movement spaces to reduce the possibility of kids running in front of the swing. This space has your generic swings as well as a large net swing. This space is popular so kids will need to line up and wait for a turn.
Balancing Beams
Throughout the park you will find balancing beams and hopping logs.
Teen Breakout
We didn’t utilise the teen breakout space that is documented in the plans. We did note many tweens and teens in the park however they predominately used the flying foxe and swing spaces.
Everyone Can Play | Inclusive Play
As part of the NSW Government’s Everyone Can Play Program, over 80 per cent of the new Oatley Adventure Playground is accessible for children of all abilities.
Parking at Oatley Park
Whilst the park is quite crowded there is plentiful parking on site. Please be mindful that the road is one way so if you miss a spot you will need to drive around the circuit to head back.
Parking bays are not lined, so you will need to use your judgment when parking. Some spaces are a short walk to the playground.
Toilet Area
Toilet facilities are around 200 metres from the playground itself.
Eating at Oatley Park
There are no eating facilities on the grounds of Oatley Park. There are a number of BBQ spaces for families to utilise with BYO items. These spaces are shaded and have adequate space to sit and eat.
Getting to Oatley Park Adventure Playspace
Oatley Park Adventure Playspace is easy to find in a car. Head to 1 Dame Mary Gilmore Rd, Oatley where you can enter the park. Follow the road from the entry around 500 metres where you will find the playground on your right.
